- AdditionalInfo:This watch is designed for regatta racing enthusiasts, Admiral's Cup followers among others. The beautifully designed ten minute regatta countdown function is featured in two prominent places on this timepiece. Firstly, across the center of the dial are 5 apertures, exclusively used to time the ten minute regatta countdown. The first five minutes are illustrated with the apertures showing all blue; each successive minute displays an additional red circle, until all apertures show red - at ten minutes. In addition, the 30-minute totalizer subdial at 9 o'clock displays 5 initial blue minute markers and 5 consecutive red minute markers. The dial also includes the 'RACING' insignia above the 12 subdial.
A little history about the 10-minute countdown and the America's Cup:
The ten-minute period before the official start of the boat race is the most frenzied and is observed by many to be the most exciting part of the race. It is also quite confusing to the uninitiated. Being in first place at the race start is of obvious benefit. Crossing the start line ahead may be less important than starting on the favoured side of the line, or having the ability to tack and control your position immediately after the gun has fired.
Statistics indicate that more than half the time, a boat that crosses the line first, wins! The major question before the race start is which way will the wind shift after the start gun has fired. A ten-minute warning gun is fired to bring the racing crew to attention and to give them time to stow unwanted sails and equipment and collect final race 'intelligence' from the weather team and coaches. At the five-minute gun, crews are under the starters' orders - no outside assistance is permitted. With an overall strategy and tactical plan now decided, the crew manoeuvers its boat downwind into the starting box. The five-minute countdown to the start gun - the pre-start period - is used by both opponents to attempt to dominate the opposition. The pre-start period is used to gain a positional advantage over one's opponent, and to avoid being penalised whilst trying to force a penalty onto the opponent in the tight manoeuvring.
The most sought-after skill is that of the America's Cup helmsman. Judging the time and distance in the final approach to the start line with the aim of hitting it at full speed as the gun goes, is of critical import. Cross too early and the boat must return and start again. Cross too late and the opposition will benefit positionally. As the start gun goes the two boats will be seen crossing the start line heading upwind towards the first mark. But a closer look at the pair will reveal that one boat is on the left, while the other has the right side of the race course. They may be close, one might have crossed the line ahead of the other but only one of the boats has the left or the right. As the wind shifts in one direction or the other, the boat on the side of the direction of the wind shift will benefit most.
The gentlemen's sport of competitive yacht racing, is one of great skill and tactics. The Omega Seamaster Racing represents the highest in watchmaking achievement, and is a useful companion in the competitive boat racing environment. - AlsoCalled:25695200
